E. Mel Stiles

E. Mel Stiles, 99, of Maquoketa passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

His funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa until the time of service. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Maquoketa.  Lahey Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time.

Mel Stiles was born on March 25, 1918 to Nicholas and Barbara (Kass) Stiles in Harmony, Minnesota. He attended Goose Lake High School. He married Bernice Geber on May 16, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Bernice and Mel owned and operated Stiles Cleaners for many years, worked at Kendall’s Menswear and after retirement he was a greeter at Wal-Mart.  

Mel was a member of the US Army Anti-Aircraft Division – Pacific Theater WWII.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, of O’Connor Regenwether VFW, and a past member of Maquoketa and Timber City American Legion Post #75.

Those left to cherish his memories are his several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernice, four brothers and four sisters.

Memorials may be directed to his family in his honor.
