Arnold James Harder was born August 5, 1918 in Clinton County, Iowa, the son of William and Alma (Parmer) Harder. He graduated from Delmar High School in 1936. He married Celia L. Holtz on January 12, 1941. His wife died on July 10, 2008. Mr. Harder farmed the family farm near Delmar for 30 years until semi-retirement in 1971. In the early years, he supplemented farming income by driving a bulk mail route twice a day from the train station at Spragueville to Delmar and to Lost Nation. In later years, he also drove school bus for Delwood school district, and upon leaving the farm, delivered feed for the B & Z Mill in Maquoketa. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa, was devoted to his family, enjoyed travel, and held an abiding appreciation of nature.

Mr. Harder is survived by daughters, Susan (Philip) Hall of Tipton, Bonnie (Robert) Temperley of Clinton, and a son, Richard (Kathleen) Harder of Largo, Florida; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his parents, two brothers, Alfred and Clarence, and one sister, Wilma Mann.

Arnold James Harder, 90, of Maquoketa, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, of heart failure at Maquoketa Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.
