Dorothy was born on March 17, 1920 to John and Edith (Florence) Beck of Maquoketa, Iowa. After the death of Dorothy's Mother, she was lovingly raised
by her grandparents, Charles and Bertha Florence, also of Maquoketa, Iowa.
Dorothy graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1938 and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She soon thereafter enlisted in the US Army. She proudly served in the 200th General Hospital, 130th Station Hospital as a Second Lieutenant. She was one of General Patton's nurses when he died. After Dorothy's honorable discharge, she worked in VA Hospitals, first in Boise, Idaho, before coming to the VA Hospital in Nashville, where she spent over 40 years.
She was a member of the Maquoketa American Legion and the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association. Dorothy and her friend of over 50 years, Marian Dorsey, liked boating, studying German, traveling and bird watching. Their neighbors in West Nashville appreciated their efforts over the years to keep a small public neighborhood park clean and pretty. Holly, a dog they rescued as a stray, was a special and spoiled part of their household for many years. Dorothy was an active supporter of the Humane Shelter and other animal rights organizations.
