Lyle Tompkins Obituary

Lyle William Tompkins, 69 of Clarence and formerly of Wyoming passed away on November 15, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer at ST. Luke’s Hospice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

His funeral service will be held at Lahey and Dawson Funeral Home in Wyoming, Iowa on Monday, November 18, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. before the service.

 

Lyle was born on September 11, 1950 to Roy and Lillian (Gabel) Tompkins. He graduated Midland High School in Wyoming in 1968 and attended Iowa State University for botany and bacteriology.

He married Wendy Johnston on June 5, 1976 in Springville, Iowa. He owned and operated the trucking company WEXL for many years before retiring.

Lyle loved nature and was an avid fisherman and mushroom hunter. He enjoyed reading, classical music, carpentry and tending to his honeybees. He especially loved spending time with his family. Time with the grandkids brought him the greatest joy and he will be missed by so many.

 

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Wendy Tompkins of 43 years, daughter,  Heather (Tony) Covington of Anamosa, sons; Roy Tompkins of Clarence, and Karl “K.C.” Tompkins of Clarence, grandchildren; Makayla, Emily, William, Adelyn, Ali, Eddie, Nolan and soon to be one great-granddaughter, sisters; Cheryl Williams (Randy) of Troutville, VA, Mary (Bill) Mommsen of Elvira, Roanne (Mark) Willey of Center Junction, Beverley (Bob) Hickle of Blue Grass, Valerie (Steve) Wherry of Wyoming, Chauncey “Tommy” (Deb) Tompkins of Monmouth, brother-in-law David Hickey, sisters-in-law Carol Falco of Solon, Nancy (Terry) Wurster of Springville, Joyce (Ron) Berg of Claremore, OK, brother-in-laws Lyle (Kellie) Johnston of Claremore, OK and Jeff (JoLynn) Johnston of Warsaw, KY and many nieces and nephews.  

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Todd, grandparents Lyle and Bernice Tompkins, William and Mary Gabel, mother and father in-law Karl and Meredith Johnston, brother-in-law Andy Falco and a sister-in-law Karen Hickey.
