Dr. Scholl was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Albert and Aileen (Weber) Scholl, the youngest of four siblings and the first in his family to be born in a hospital.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, from 1951-1955. He married Margery Witt on Sept. 10, 1955. She died on Feb. 16, 1958, leaving behind a newborn daughter, Julie Ann.

Dr. Scholl was the first in his family to graduate from college. He studied pre-optometry at the University of Iowa and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1960 at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.

He married Catherine Ann Baldauf on April 23, 1960. Together, they had five more children. They divorced in 1992. Catherine died July 26, 2004. He married Nancy Henton of Maquoketa on August 29, 1998. They moved to Dahlonega in 2005.

Dr. Scholl practiced optometry in DeWitt, Iowa, from 1960-1971 and in Cedar Rapids from 1971 to 2005.  He owned Eye Care North until his retirement. While in Georgia, Dr. Scholl worked as a part-time optometrist for various optometry offices. He fully retired in 2015 after 55 years in optometry.

He enjoyed building model airplanes, tinkering with cars and small engines, and at one time restored antique cars. A licensed pilot, he enjoyed flying. He was also a voracious reader, especially of books dealing with World War II and history in general.
