Richard Sawyer Obituary

Richard Lee Sawyer, 87 of Oxford Junction formerly of Center Point passed away on Tuesday,

June 28, 2022, at the Maquoketa Care Center.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 11:00 am at Center Point Cemetery

in Center Point. Dawson Funeral Services of Oxford Junction is caring for his family.

Richard was born on May 14, 1935, in Iowa City to Willard “Bill” and Alice (Kirk) Sawyer. He

graduated from Toddville High School. Richard enlisted in October 1954 and served faithfully

and honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict he was discharged

11/11/1962. Richard married Gwen Eakle in 1957 and two daughters came from the marriage. He

then worked as a factory worker and was a volunteer fire fighter and EMT with the Center Point

Fire Department. He was a member of the Toddville American Legion and former Commander

of Wapsi Post 473 American Legion in Oxford Junction. Richard was the Center Point Town

Marshall, Civil Defense Director, and a Deputy Sheriff with Linn County. Richard started the

EMT program in Center Point and trained many in CPR and first aid as well as an American Red

Cross trainer. Richard enjoyed fishing and tinkering with electronics. He was a Ham radio

enthusiast and avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. He was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran

Church in Oxford Junction.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters; Darla (Jerry) Holden, Rhonda (David)

Mossner, two grandchildren; Matthew and Mark (Jenna) Mossner, sister; Phyllis Haisch, brother;

David (Rebecca) Sawyer and longtime loving partner; Virginia Carter.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Gwen.

Memorials may be directed to the Oxford Junction American Legion or Center Point Fire
